Learning Dynamo for Civil 3D Road Design

Hello everyone,

I’m a highway design engineer, and I’ve been thinking about learning Dynamo to improve my workflows in Civil 3D. The challenge I’m facing is that I’m not entirely sure what Dynamo can realistically do for road design, and whether it’s worth the investment of time and effort.

I’ve tried looking for courses or tutorials, but most of what I find is either too general or not related to highway/road design specifically.

Could anyone share:

  • The main benefits and use cases of Dynamo in highway/road design?

  • Whether it’s truly valuable for day-to-day workflows in Civil 3D?

  • Good resources (courses, videos, examples) to start learning Dynamo with a focus on road design?

Any advice would be really appreciated. Thank you!

Dynamo is worth learning. I am also civil engineer at road design and I don’t even want to remember days then there wasn’t Dynamo. Good news is that Dynamo has many great examples within its resources. Have a look at this section, plenty of cases which you can benefit and build your own custom graphs:)

hi @anastur3ani

  • My recommendation to is to proactively read posts in this blog, even if they don’t seem relevant to you. Even if it’s for another application like Revit. It’s difficult to summarise everything that Dynamo could be used for.

  • You will get a good sense of what others are using Dynamo for & how it can be applied.

The tags might help in filtering out relevant posts- but they aren’t always applied well.

  • I’d spend 5 minutes each day just reading the latest posts

  • The best way to learn Dynamo is by applying it to your own work/tasks. Tutorials might be a helpful start, but my philosophy is ‘learn by doing’
