I want to create clearance zone for conceptual masses in a project. The masses are project specific, so there’s no family to edit. The width of the zone is dependent of the height of the building.
Is this possible with this type of object? Or does it only work with family instances?
Any feedback would be much appreciated. (2D or 3D solutions both welcome)
Yes, it’s possible to create a clearance area with massing. You can use a clearance object material for the clearance geometry.
It won’t be quite as flexible as a loadable family, so depending on your needs, it may be a good fit or it may not. Hard to say without more information.
Consider using roofs or ceilings. I’ve used them in lieu of massing for ages now and am in the process of trying to convert a large firm to it also.
Families are great until you need them to change shape from a box, if you can generate an outline in dynamo, you can make a ceiling/roof. The height is locked in the type properties but its possible to duplicate ceiling types and modify their compound layer thickness as well.
The idea here is the volume of the ceiling represents the mass. Ceilings/roofs both grow up from the level they are drawn on if you offset them at 0. I have a video here which shows how it could work. See them not as ceilings, but as stacking blocks that can report their areas whilst allowing users to simply sketch them unlike a mass.
