Open plan office its a true hell for me, lot of noise, constant smalltalk about kids, dogs, cats, cars, football, what party in the weekend etc…bu t seems many firms go away from open plans again…
Open office with about 20-30 people around at a time
Radio is present, but most stick to their own headphones.
I usually listen to Johnny M’s Deep or Progressive House mixes on YouTube—steady beats, minimal distraction.
I work with three screens: Revit floorplan, Revit 3D, and Dynamo.
Window’s multiple desktops feature also help keep things organized and allows for switching to whatsapp
At home, I rarely script, but when inspiration hits, I can work late into the night on my two screens
I am home based, but offhand I think that our coworking space in Stockholm has 10 desks in hard walled office area. There are two phone booths and dozens of ‘30 minute’ rooms to choose from, and a bunch of places where you can setup shop with a laptop and get to work with various degrees of environmental distractions. If you need extended focus time, stay home that day (or go in on Friday when there is no one around).
It’s called socializing though. Maybe you should try it
But I think it depends on the work environment. People just follow the herd-vibe in that sense.
Sometimes we just want to connect and we talk about bullshit. If not your colleagues, who else are you going to talk about your kids with?
Home office here as our whole team is remote. I have been remote since 2017.
Two desks; one for me and one for my wife when she works from home (twice a week). I typically work in silence (people say I am crazy), and I generally have our 75-pound Black Lab around my chair somewhere.
Something I think is worth mentioning. Ever since I have worked from home, I have ensured that I have a dedicated space for “work”, that way I can “head to the office”. Additionally, I leave the office for lunch and breaks, and try to “leave work at work”, etc.
No, other people talking just makes me lose focus. Whether it’s about their day or some book being read or some podcast.
Music any time works much better. Silence is just weird. My dad has is too. You can just hear your own typing or any enviroment sounds like birds or trains or something. Or the AC… No thank you sir, I prefer my focus vibe being directed
Hybrid (2in/3out) with open plan being the only office environment I’ve ever known. Company is incredibly flexible towards anyone in a digital role which is nice, although VPN and net speeds can be a real challenge in Australia.
Whilst I do like being in the office, having time at home really helps when coding. I save my more intense work for then as it’s hard working with disruptions. I very much foster a ‘just come over to me if you need help’ attitude, don’t want to be the guy in the corner.
This is my view, which is a huge selling point for wfh!
I prefer work alone because I really hate noises.I have worked for different companies. One is over 400 people on a re decorated 2 floor factory building. We all have a telephone because colleagues from discipline like architecture structure MEP have to communicate with each anytime. Can you image phone rings one after another. It’s really nightmare.
Even some small office room with about 12 people in it.The phone rings, the chat is really annoying. And some people tend to speak loudly on phone.I really don’t care or want to hear what they say. They are big distractions.
Sometimes when I really focus into what I’m doing.I can ignore these sounds. But most of time these noise are really annoying.
