Managed to get reference curves in Vasari on the XY plane, but a similar approach doesn’t seem to work on the XZ and YZ planes.
What am I doing wrong? I’ve attached a screen grab of the issue below.

I think the issue is that the circles are being generated horizontally and the sketchplane is vertical. You can add a curve transformation to the circle:
