We design and fabricate engineered structures and need to bring our configuration and modeling system in-house. The focus is on building a rule-driven framework that controls assemblies, outputs drawings, and generates BOMs in a clean and scalable way.
I’m not looking for general BIM support. This is about system architecture and long-term ownership, not project modeling. This would start as a short-term consulting engagement.
If you’ve done this before, I’d be interested in talking.
I can’t help directly - you’d need to reach out to start a consulting contract if that is what you’re after, but people on my larger team and I have helped quite a few in this space.
I can share that there is a good process to start down this path. Failing to do the initial legwork will eventually lead to some kind of costly rework or even failure.
- Validate the cost today without the tool
- Define the user base (internal design team only? External consultants? Customers?) and confirm that you have the infosec in place to deal with such.
- Confirm your users have the expertise internally to utilize the output of the tool (a Dynamo based tool means you will need internal expertise in both Dynamo and Revit).
- Confirm you can commit to the operation and maintenance costs of the tool - this should be a literal line item in your annual budget not a thing you address later if it’s a consultant provided tool; or a set chunk of staffing hours if you plan on maintaining it yourself.
- Define the input and output types clearly and completely. Looking at inputs if one set of the users want to just provide [width, length, height], but another set wants to also include [location, orientation] and another wants to use a 3D geometry you actually need three separate graphs. When you add in outputs if one set of users want just a Revit model and another wants Revit model and excel and another want Revit, excel, and DWG then you now need 9 tools (3 input tools * 3 output tools). The only alternative is to ensure all users are able to build/modify the tools on their own.
