I’m trying to select all the text in the entire project that is not in a group. Is there a way to excluded elements that are in a group?

You usually need to be pretty generic with your searches to get started. I recommend starting with just the object or functionality you’re wanting and then increasing the specifics or filtering afterwards. Most solutions aren’t specific to their topic, but to a general workflow or idea. It just takes practice.
